Layering rugs on top of your carpet is a stylish way to add more warmth and depth to your home, but after moving your rug back into position for the 100th time in a day, you might be wondering how you can make it stay put - for good.

How to stop rugs moving on carpet

Repositioning your rug time after time can be incredibly tedious, especially when you’ve spent time and effort furnishing your home. Rugs can shift out of position over time, even on carpeted floors. In addition to altering the visual aesthetic of the room, moving rugs can pose a tripping hazard, especially for pets and children.

Questions around stopping rugs slipping are something that our in-store experts get asked on a daily basis at Frith Rugs by customers who are tired of being tripped up. With decades of experience in sourcing and selling rugs, we’ve got three easy tricks up our sleeves that will keep your rug firmly in place without damaging the carpet underneath.

1. Use rug underlay

It is a common misconception that placing rug underlay on top of carpet might cause damage to it, but this isn’t true. Rug underlay is the best, simplest way to prevent a rug shifting about when it is placed on top of carpet. Pick an anti-slip variety for extra security.

These are two of our favourite underlays to use for this purpose:

  • Foxi Anti-creep Underlay - The Foxi anti-creep underlay can be applied to carpets and smooth flooring as it acts as rug tape to keep your rug in place

  • Supergrip Underlay - In contrast, our Supergrip underlays are perfect for stopping rugs from moving on all types of hard floors and providing extra cushioning for your rug.

Both of these products are made with anti-slip technology to ensure that your rugs won’t budge.

Top tip: If you have purchased a rug, such as a handwoven Chinese or Indian rug, then a rug underlay can also help to protect the back of your rug and prevent dye transfer, thus prolonging its life and maintaining its value.

2. Anchor the rug with furniture

When it comes to larger area rugs, furniture can serve as a good anchor. Although it won't completely prevent corners from lifting, placing large items like dining table sets or sofas over a rug can help hold a rug in place on any type of flooring.

3. Use rug tape

If you have a smaller rug to keep in place on top of your carpet, a double sided rug tape may be all that you need. This is the most inexpensive option, however, the tape will need to be replaced semi-frequently depending on how often your rug is walked over.

You should double-check that the rug tape you choose is appropriate for use on top of carpets, as if it isn’t it may leave a sticky residue behind.

Say goodbye to slips and trips

Now you know how to stop your rugs slipping on carpet, you can wave goodbye to slips and trips caused by uneven flooring in unexpected places. Whether you choose rug underlay, tape, or simply anchor your rug in place with furniture, we hope you found our advice helpful.
