Halloween is just around the corner and so what better time to introduce a touch of black magic to your interior design scheme? Black has been, and will always be, a popular choice for the home and you don’t have to be an interior designer to use it well.
Just like its opposite colour white – black is bold and versatile. It can also be dramatic if you want it to be, but used carefully it can also demonstrate style and sass. If that sounds like you, then read on.
Let’s assume you are not decorating everywhere with black, (although if you love the gothic style go for it!) and instead provide some key tips to using the colour. Black is great for defining an area of the room – a black feature wall or a large black rug on the floor will do that.
Once you have your feature wall and/or rug, use black sparingly in other pieces. If you have too much black, that’s when it can go from class to crass quite quickly. In an average sized room, you will only need a couple of other pieces – a black framed mirror, a piece of art or an ornate lamp. Think about what other colours work well with black. There are many, but you can’t go wrong with black and white and so have white cushions and throws and pick one other bold colour as an accent – red, pink, orange and yellow are black’s good friends.
However, a word of warning – use a colour wheel to make sure you find the right shade of your bright colour – if you get the shade even slightly wrong it will throw the entire scheme out.
